Mayor Garcetti understands that hospital workers and emergency responders are saving lives each day during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is our job as a city to support these front line heroes in every way possible. That’s why, in April, Mayor Garcetti launched L.A. Emergency Child Care Connection, a program to provide child care support to essential health care workers at participating hospitals throughout the crisis.

Beginning May 13, the Mayor expanded his L.A. Emergency Child Care Connection to offer child care resources and services to City of L.A. emergency responders as well -- our police officers and sworn members of our fire department, the Port of Los Angeles, and Los Angeles World Airports as well as staff from our sanitation and personnel departments charged with protecting public health -- to help protect their families while they protect all Angelenos in this emergency.

ENHANCED CHILD CARE REFERRALS FOR CITY EMERGENCY RESPONDERS

City of L.A. emergency responders* will have access to enhanced child care referral programs to meet their specific needs. Emergency responders may use the County of Los Angeles Resource & Referral (R&R) Agency to help identify and vet the best child care options for their families. Additionally, WeeCare and Carina Care offer referral services to emergency responders by providing online child care matchmaking services for families including weekend, nighttime, and drop-in child care options.

In addition, City emergency responders may be eligible for the subsidized child care program announced by Governor Newsom on April 29. The eligibility criteria for this program depends on income and family size. The Child Care Funding for Essential Workers  program is run through the County of Los Angeles. To learn about your eligibility and child care options, call (888) 922-4453 or find your local Resource & Referral agency.

RECREATION AND PARKS CHILD CARE CENTERS

The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks is offering temporary free child care for hospital workers and City emergency responders* at select recreation centers from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday for children ages 6 to 14. Academic assistance and recreation activities will be provided, and children will receive pre-packaged meals and snacks. Each center follows the Los Angeles County Public Health guidelines regarding group stability and social distancing. Staff and children are screened daily for COVID-19 symptoms. Anyone showing signs of illness will be isolated and asked to return home. Parents must pre-register to participate in this program and will be asked to show their hospital or City ID at drop off each day. Space is limited and is allocated on a first come, first served basis. If interested, please contact Recreation and Parks through this form: https://bit.ly/ECCP2020

*City of Los Angeles employee Emergency Responders are defined in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) memo issued by the Personnel Department on April 10, 2020, including all staff in LAPD, sworn personnel in LAFD, POLA and LAWA, Bureau of Sanitation staff who perform functions essential to the maintenance of public health and all licensed health care professionals in the Personnel Department. Please check with your HR department if you are classified as an Emergency Responder.

The stipends prioritize lower wage workers and can be used to pay a family member, friend, neighbor, babysitter or childcare provider. There is a limited amount of funding available.
